It comes as no surprise that the long awaited Kung Fu Panda 3 has topped the box office charts the weekend of its release grossing 41 million dollars at the box office. The clumsy panda blasted ahead of The Revenant and Force Awakens who maintain a tight grip on second and third place respectively.*
Kung Fu Panda was not the only film released to mark January’s end. The Finest Hours, an American Historical Disaster film starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck came in fourth netting a little over ten million. Comedy parody 50 Shades of Black was also released this week, in 9th position it barely makes the top ten with a gross of six million. Jane Got a Gun which was released last Friday scored into 17th place with only $803,000 while Rabin, the Last Day sank into 40th place with a measly $7,854.
20th Century Fox was the top distributor this weekend, earning 54 million dollars who’s percentage change skyrocketed by 192.8% no doubt in relation to the release and success of Kung Fu Panda. Buena Vista productions also saw a percentage increase of 41.4% due in part to the success of The Finest Hours and the continued success of The Force Awakens.
Despite profit decreases for most films some that are already several weeks old are on the incline. Son of Saul which has been out for seven weeks now jumped from 38th place to 33rd this week, having had a profit increase of 83% likely due to the 21+ increase to theatre showings. Another example would be 45 Years which leapt from 31st to 24th this week and showed a profit surge of 195.4% the greatest leap of the week and +55 to the theatre showing count.
In terms of sheer gross Star Wars tops takes the lead with a massive 895 million dollars which is followed by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 with 280 million and has since fallen into 30th place. Meanwhile the Revenant in second place has scored a gross total of 138 million just losing out to Daddy’s Home with 143 million.
Open Road Films was the studio with the highest growth this weekend earning a 473.7% increase due to the financial success of 50 shades of Black. IFC leapt up an impressive 195.4% from the recent boon of 45 Years.
