Russia has responded to the flood of American superhero films that have been swarming our cinemas with a muscular, machine-gun wielding, bear man.
Russia’s most recent offering Hardcore Henry is a special thrill-ride and the countries next big project could be just as exhilarating. Guardians, or Zaschitniki as it is known in Russia, is being directed by Sarik Andreasyan. The film is set during the Cold War era and features a group of super powered individuals that are brought together from differing regions of the Soviet Union to fight some supernatural threat.
The trailer unveils numerous heroes including a man with telekinetic abilities, a ninja with fearsome blades who can move at breakneck speed and a woman who seems to have power over water.
Still it is the bear man who dominates the trailer though he only appears for a few seconds. Whether the bear is on the side of good or evil is up for debate. After all he is only seen for a moment mauling some nameless soldier. For all we know the film could be about an army of rampaging man-bears. When put that way, the plot just sounds silly.
Still, I have a feeling that there will be more to this movie than armed bears wielding automatic weapons. I only hope it does not follow the same worn-out plot formula as its Hollywood counterparts. The film is not scheduled to be released until Febrarary of 2017.
