If you’re a fan of Girlboss, you’re going to want to hear this. Netflix has officially announced that they are pulling the plug on the Netflix Series, Girlboss after one season, continuing their vow to be more ruthless in cutting shows.
Inspired by Sophia Amoruso’s best-selling book, the show Girlboss is based around the rise of Amoruso’s multi-million dollar fashion empire, Nasty Gal. The lead role of Sophia is played by Britt Robertson who portrays a rebellious, broke anarchist who makes a decision to start selling vintage clothes online. As her empire grows, Sophia soon learns that she has to understand the values and difficulties of being her own boss.
Executive producer Charlize Theron explained the struggles of getting the series up and running.
“When we got the rights, we went to one other place (aside from Netflix). Just to give you an example, we sat in a room, the feedback we got was absolutely shocking — it was mostly men in the room. We walked out with a sense that if we didn’t find the right home for this, it would become something very mediocre.”
The cancellation comes just weeks after Netflix announced a number of other cancellations of shows such as Sense8 and The Get Down. In reference to cancelling these shows, Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos said at PGA’s Produced By Conference earlier this month:
“Relative to what you spent, are people watching it?… A big expensive show for a huge audience is great. A big, expensive show for a tiny audience is hard even in our model to make that work very long.”
Despite fan backlash, especially over the cancellation of Sense8 and the loss of diverse representations on that show, Netflix is determined to be more ruthless with the axe. As for what is the next show that will join the Netflix graveyard? Only time will tell.
