HBO Unveils Trailer for “The Case Against Adnan Syed”

It was the case that made podcasts so incredibly popular. Originally covered by Sarah Koenig and This American Life, Serial introduced the case against Adnan Syed to the world.

Adnan Syed was convicted in 2000 of murdering Hae Min Lee, his ex-girlfriend, in 1999. Since it’s introduction on season one of Serial, audiences have been torn on whether or not Adnan Syed was wrongfully convicted. Serial raised many questions, with the most popular relating to Syed’s attorney’s decision to forgo calling potential alibi witnesses.

With its consistent popularity and the public’s obsession with true crime, HBO has jumped on the bandwagon and made a Making a Murderer-esque documentary about the case. With not a lot of details available about the upcoming feature, HBO has just dropped the trailer for The Case Against Adnan Syed.

This documentary will provide striking details and imagery to the already gruesome scenes we know from Serial. Director Amy Berg promises audiences “a piece of evidence that nobody even realised existed for all these years.”

The Case Against Adnan Syed began production in 2015 and closely examines every step leading up to the disappearance of Hae Min Lee.

June 2016 saw Syed’s conviction vacated and the accused was granted a retrial after new evidence regarding the cell phone data was challenged and an alibi witness finally had their time to tell their truth. After the State of Maryland appealed the lower court’s ruling, the Court of Special Appeals ruled to vacate the conviction in March 2018 and granted Syed a retrial.
