New in Film and Television This Week

With summer in the US fast approaching, plenty of new film and television trailers are being released. From explorations of humanity to the more classic sets of 1920’s England, there’s a diverse range of films being released over the next year.

Here’s a few trailers and some news that has come from the film industry this week:

Trailers

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood

Just hours before its big Cannes debut, the official trailer for Once Upon A Time in Hollywood was released. Quentin Tarantino’s latest feature-length film features an all-star cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino and Dakota Fanning (among others). If the teaser trailer that was released in March didn’t already convince you this was THE film to watch, this much lengthier one will.

In Tarantino’s bid to keep the film’s plot points on lockdown, OUATIH’s trailer doesn’t give away too much. We see DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton during his fall from grace as Hollywood’s best, Pitt’s Cliff Booth doing stunt-man magic and Robbie’s Sharon Tate on the rise as Hollywood’s newest young star.

Downton Abbey

The King and Queen are going to Downton Abbey.

The tale of Downton Abbey continues with the release of the franchise’s film. The film will revolve around King George and Queen Mary’s visit to the estate for a royal luncheon, parade and dinner. It appears as if the whole gang is back – the Downton staff are working away at making the Edwardian manor fit for the royals, the Dowager Countess provides the entertainment with her sassy little remarks and Lady Mary stirs up a bit of drama as she wonders whether she could walk away from it all. Former butler Charles Carson makes an appearance and former villainous Butler Thomas Barrow is seen locking lips with another gentlemen. Let the drama of 1927 begin!

Black Mirror

The trailer for Black Mirror season five was released late last week but Netflix have gone above and beyond and released the trailers for the season’s episodes. There’s only three of them but are set to debut on June 5th. Black Mirror has successfully explored the relationship between humanity and technology, and this season isn’t going to be any different.

In Smithereens, the trailer shows a cab driver listening to a meditation app and slowly becoming brain-washed before he takes his passenger hostage.

Episode two, Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too, follows a teenager as she connects with her favourite pop star (played by Miley Cyrus) through a robot toy. In the trailer, we also see glimpses from the pop star’s point-of-view as she, it seems, goes through the motions of being in the public eye.

Striking Vipers is the third, and last, episode in Black Mirror‘s short season. In this episode, two estranged college friends are reunited later in life, where they trigger a series of events that could change their lives forever.

Stranger Things

Trailer for Stranger Things 3 or advertisement for H&M’s collaboration with the hit sci-fi show? I guess we’ll never really know but that “dig the new suit Mrs Wheeler” comment from Billy seemed just a bit too obvious.

This trailer, titled Summer in Hawkins, takes place at Hawkins’ pool where a bunch of neighbourhood mums are waiting around for Billy and his mullet to take over the life guard’s post. If you’re looking for the usual sci-fi/ demogorgons/ the upside down, this trailer ain’t it.

Westworld

Not set to air until 2020, HBO have released a teaser for Westworld III. Quite vague and full of foreboding and unease, the trailer teases at a dystopian future, not far off from what we’ll most likely experience. The third season leaves the robot-populated theme park and takes place in the outside world where a distressed Aaron Paul searches for authenticity in a synthetic world.
