Game of Thrones show runners David Benioff and DB Weiss have found their new home. Could this be a match made in streaming service heaven?
The Emmy Award-Winning Show Runners have been signed by Netflix on a multi-picture deal. This deal will see the pair write, produce and direct original content. This was reported by Deadline who suggested the deal signed is worth $300 Million over five years.
Following Game of Thrones, the pair were approached by six studios to produce original content. After three months of discussions, the duo decided to call Netflix their home.
“Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honoured they invited us to join them,” Weiss and Benioff told Deadline.
Although Game of Thrones was a massive hit, there will be a lot of pressure on Benioff and Weiss to replicate it’s success. Benioff and Weiss have been put into question after the critical reception of the final season of Game of Thrones, which went far off-book. Despite a lackluster final season, their talent cannot be questioned. Along with their show being critically acclaimed, Game of Thrones became a cultural phenomenon with millions tuning in every season.
Streaming contenders sure to add more pressure is the upcoming Disney + and Warner Media, which may see some lost subscribers for Netflix.
Along with signing the Netflix contract, the pair have other projects they are currently working on. In 2017, Benioff and Weiss signed on to write and produce a brand new Star Wars Trilogy. This trilogy would be the first of many in the Star Wars universe that have strayed away from the Skywalker saga. Due to the newfound partnership with Netflix, it is unclear whether or not the trilogy will go ahead.
Benioff and Weiss will be raring to go, hoping to make the next pop culture phenomenon to maintain Netflix’s position at the top of the streaming food chain; and to redeem their own reputation, of course.
