Birds of Prey Trailer Breakdown

Birds of Prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn, sure does sound like a mouthful, but oh boy does it look like fun.

Following on from a successful opening weekend for Joker, DC have released the first trailer for their Birds of Prey film. Here are some key moments and reveals that has us excited!

Return of Harley Quinn

The trailer opens up with Harley walking through the city and outlining the role of a Harley Quinn, stating “A Harley Quinn’s role is to serve, they’re nothing without a master”. Harley Quinn later states that she has broken up with the clown prince of Gotham and that she is in search of a fresh start. Harley Quinn is seen cutting her hair following the break up, but can still be seen wearing a J necklace. The next frame indicates this was a bad break up, with a knife planted on an image of the jokers face.

The next cast member we get a decent look at is Black Canary. We get a little hint at the powers that she possesses, with her voice doing damage. This can be seen through a martini glass moving whilst she is performing on stage in front of a crowd.

Renee Montoya

Renne Montoya is a member of the Gothan police force in the comics and it appears as if she has just been fired from her post. As she is walking out with a cardboard, people are clapping her out. Did she do something heroic? Or are people just happy she’s gone? Who’s to say at this point?

Huntress

We are then shown our first glimpse of Huntress. Huntress is an original member of the Birds of Prey from the comics and is a vigilante assassin. Huntress throughout her history in comics has always used a crossbow as her weapon of choice. Huntress is also seen at the start of the trailer sitting in a church, this is because the character is Catholic. Huntress is also seen attacking a group of men in a club later on in the trailer.

Black Mask – Roman Sionis

Another character reveal from the trailer is the villain Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor. We do not see Ewan sport the iconic Black Mask yet, however we do get a look at his iconic white suit and black glove costume, along with a shot of the Sionis logo on his right hand.

Harley’s Hyena

Has Harley Quinn found a replacement for the Joker? Although as strange as it seems, Harley Quinn has had pet Hyena’s in the comics before. Harley’s Hyenas Bud and Lou appeared in the Batman Animated Series along with the New 52 run. Maybe both of Harley’s hyenas will appear.

Booby Trap

I’m going to be straight with you, there is no way in hell I would ever consider walking through this thing. Look at it. It appears to be an homage to the Joker’s Fun House, a place where the Joker torments and murders a lot of his victims.

Cassandra Cain

It appears that Casandra will drive the plot, as she gets caught up in the mess that is Black Mask. Casandra Kane is often mute in the comics, but it appears that they may be going a different route for this story.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

The sequence where Harley Quinn dances with a bunch of men around her is a homage to Marilyn Monroe’s “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” film and song. The outfits and colours looks almost identical to the original. Could this potentially be a dream sequence?

Intercut with a lot of action, Birds of Prey looks like an absolute blast. DC have been slowly but surely edging closer to the right direction, following the universally praised Joker along with critically successful Shazam. Here’s to hoping that DC have got another hit on their hands!

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is set to be released on the 7th of February.
