‘The Batman’ trailer dropped like a hot potato, stirring up controversies even before the movie has been released. Most likely due to the fact that the role of Batman is played by Twilight’s most loved vampire sweetheart, Edward Cullen a.k.a Robert Pattinson. The burning question is, is this movie going to be a dark-blockbuster hit or yet another Jared Leto Joker disaster?
The first trailer sees Robert Pattinson transform into the Dark Knight. It happens to be the most anticipated DC movie and director Matt Reeves knew what was best to boost the spirit of the audience during lock-down.
Reeves specifically mentioned to The Verge that Batman, isn’t Batman yet, “There are people who are afraid of him, quite frankly.” For every DC fan that identifies with the DC Universe, the movie has a typical storytelling tone. As always, Gotham city is rampaging with criminals and a diabolic force is plotting to end Batman. What we get to see in the trailer is a goth-version of Robert Pattinson, quite intimidating to the fans.
The predecessors of Batman, Christian Bale, Michael Keaton and even Ben Affleck’s portrayals of a well-groomed, articulated play boy version is on halt. Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne adaptation is meant to make the audience slightly more uncomfortable.
With only 25% of the entire movie shot so far, Reeves is commendable at posting such a promising trailer for the fans. Reeves description of the R-Bat is more ‘noir-driven, a detective version of Batman.’ Hence, it re-visits the origin story and is set to quench the thirst of Bat-fans!
The trailer gives glimpses of the Batcave that rather looks like a simple garage embellished with something high-techy, the Batman’s suit sort of like the Eric-Cantona-styled collars, forged in steel, and the Batmobile, the caped crusaders mode of manoeuvre resembles more of a common stock car rather than a sleek tank yet eye-catchy. After what Ben Affleck’s version has done to its fans, we get to see a rather darkness-personified, spine-chilling noir mystery feature. This version of Pattinson has broken the imagery of the Twilight-sweetheart forever!
During the Fandom event, Reeves mentioned that, “One of the things that are interesting is learning how to be Batman. It’s a criminological experiment. He’s trying to figure out what he can do to change this place. He’s seeing he’s not having any of the effect he wants to have. That’s when the murders start to happen … and it opens up a whole new world of corruption.”
Not being an origin-symphony makes this movie more mysterious. A detective story that is meant to be personal. A growing legend who instantly scares off the criminals but also commits errors, to portray a persona of a hero who is very human and very flawed.
The Batman is the recent iteration of the Caped Crusader and besides Pattinson giving us the goosebumps as the new Bruce Wayne, we see Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton or the popular Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. And Reeves confirms that Dano’s Riddler and Kravitz’s Catwoman is nothing like the ordinary.
This Batman movie is not trying to selling the biggest superhero blockbuster, instead it focuses on providing that phase to Batman that is imprecise. While any trailer release is up for a debate, this one seems to be having mixed emotions altogether. Some are eagerly waiting for this serial killer thriller version of the Bat-franchise, few others are skeptical in accepting The Batman where the throbbing action beat is Pattinson, that seems to be a less of a big-scale spectacle. Even Batman Begins that touches on the grounded and grim-dark action hero, more of a pulpy adventure fantasy wasn’t necessarily top-notch. So, The Batman can be either pessimistically discarded for overconfidence or optimistically awarded for recapitulating into the origin tales of the dark hero.
The movie is set to see the light in 2021 and only then can DC fans be assured whether Pattinson has justified The Batman or remains the vampire-slayer he was previously known for!
But in the meantime, gear up because The Batman Nirvana soundtracks might just turn you into an emo forever.
