If you thought the iconic series, “The Crown”, was ending after four long seasons, you were wrong. And from what the sources are telling us, the series is set to continue long past season five. After all, there are decades worth of royal drama to watch.
Over the production process, the fifth season has been subject to delays due to Covid. The wait is leaving fans on the edge of their seat as they count down the days until the show’s return.
And Netflix’s announcement of new cast members is definitely making it hard to wait! From the show’s OG members of the royal cast, Claire Foy and Matt Smith, to replacements of Olivia Colman and co, here’s everything we know about the next season of the royal family chronicles, “The Crown”.
Season 5 is Set to Premiere on November 9, 2022
Per Harper’s Bazaar, “Netflix previously released a dispatch from the set of The Crown in September 2021, along with a tentative premiere month. In the clip from the streamer’s fan event, Tudum, Imelda Staunton introduces herself as the show’s new Queen Elizabeth, while paying tribute to previous queens Olivia Colman and Claire Foy.”
“On behalf of the cast and crew, we look forward to bringing you the next season of The Crown in November 2022,” Staunton says.
Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West as Diana and Charles
Netflix has recently released pictures of Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West as Princess Diana and Prince Charles for the new season of The Crown – and can we just say, they are perfect for the part!
Even more perfect? Now, we have finally gotten a look at them in character.
“Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many,” Debicki said of her casting in a statement. “It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which had me absolutely hooked from episode one.
In two new official clips from the fifth season, Debicki is showcased lying on a sofa wearing a subtle smirk on her face, as West is seen fashioning none other than Prince Charles’ signature brown suit and a concerning disposition.
And best believe that this short snippet is leaving us wanting more.
Claudia Harrison is the On-screen Embodiment of Princess Anne
Make room for a new Princess Anne as Claudia Harrison enters the set. In newly released images, we see Harrison dressed as Princess Anne on set, alongside co-star, Imelda Staunton. Photographed in a casual navy parka, oversized sunglasses, hair scarf, and a bouffant hairstyle, nothing says Princess Anne more, and Harrison is definitely playing the part from what we’ve seen so far!
Imelda Staunton Steps in as Our New Queen Elizabeth II
What greater honour than to portray the late Queen Elizabeth II, a woman who had such an impact on the world and has left an even greater legacy? In Netflix’s release of the first look at Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty, we see the actress dressed in a pale-yellow dress and sporting the royal’s signature coiffed curls – and it’s giving.
This came following Netflix’s announcement that, after Olivia Colman’s tenure as Queen Elizabeth II, the series was orchestrating a replacement.
Staunton says in a statement, “I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion.”
Lesley Manville will play Princess Margaret
Replacement can also be seen in the role of Princess Margaret, where Lesley Manville will transform into the queen’s younger sister for this season of The Crown, taking over for Helena Bonham Carter. And there’s no doubt that Manville has some big shoes to fill after Carter received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in the show’s previous seasons.
“I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret,” Manville says of her role. “The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don’t want to let the side down. Furthermore, to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.”
Jonathan Pryce will Portray Prince Philip in Season 5
Following Tobias Menzies in the role of the Duke of Edinburgh, Jonathan Pryce with brown this season’s Prince Philip, acting alongside Staunton and Manville in this season’s power lead trio.
This Won’t be the Last We Hear (or see) From this On-screen Royal Family
But continue holding onto your seats because this season isn’t the last we’re seeing of this iconic series.
Despite previous announcements from Netflix that this season would be the last, they have now confirmed that a season 6 is installed.
“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” British screenwriter, Peter Morgan said in a statement.
And with Season 6 slated to bring the story into the early 2000s, as per Variety, we are suspecting that Season 5 is going to have a late ’90s focus.
And this hasn’t come as a shock as The Crown was originally meant to include six seasons, as confirmed by Netflix’s head of content, Ted Sarandos, when the show debuted in 2016, “the idea is to do this over six decades, in six seasons presumably, and make the whole show over eight to 10 years.”
So, get your tea cups out and ready for November 5th to be the first to stream The Crown season five, exclusively on Netflix.
