2015… A New Era of Supermodels

Supermodels are those hard working Glamazons who are able to turn a simple agency contract into global fame. We all know however, that the industry is such that if your looks are ‘Benjamin Button’ lucky, you will work for a decade (tops). Our fashion heroine’s careers eventually fade but the legends live on in the pages of our dusty magazines.

Each year a new crop of flawless faces open fashion weeks across the globe and adorn the coveted covers of glossy magazines and become the “faces” of high-end global campaigns.

As Heidi Klum famously said, “In fashion one day you’re in, and the next you’re out”. Here give you FIB’s predictions of who is set to join the pantheon of supermodels.

1. Lara Stone

Lara Stone is the veteran model in our countdown and the closest to achieving supermodel status. This Dutch mother oozes sex appeal and is not one afraid of showing off her sexual assets, often posing nude for dignified fashion brands like Vogue and Industry magazine (birthday suit alert!).

Lara was discovered at just 12 whilst holidaying with parents in Paris and became professionally noticed after participating (but not quite winning) the Elite Model Look competition in 1999 at 15. She definitely impressed and was signed by Elite Model Agency and later in 2006 took the opportunity to sign with IMG models. That year Lara made her debut walking in Paris for Givenchy.

Lara’s status exudes a true supermodel after being ranked 8th in Forbes top earning models countdown, the #1 spot on the top 50 models listed by models.com between Spring 2010 until Summer 2012 and then was moved to the Industry Icons list. Lara also made #8 on the list of all time sexiest models on the adulated website. She was so expensive that Prada even ‘banned’ her (clearly with a HUGE endorsement) from walking in other shows during New York Fashion Week before Prada had marched themselves in the 2007 show.

2. Freja Beha Erichsen

Freja Beha Erichsen, otherwise known as ‘The Queen Of Cool’ is the 27-year-old Ice Queen from Denmark who is known in the modelling world for her youthful and androgynous appearance.

Freja was lucky to have a moment we all secretly wish for. She was scouted in the street at 17 and that year signed with prestigious IMG Modelling Agency. This natural beauty has walked with… well almost literally everyone… She was, at the height of her career one of the most sought after models in the world and ranked #2 on models.com.

Freja’s modelling debut was opening for Mui Mui and walking for Prada and Louis Vuitton during 2005. Freja has achieved more than most models dream of and over the past 10 years has walked for Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Alexander Wang and Prada, just to name a few (no seriously there is so much more!). Freja is no doubt going to become one SUPER MODEL.

3. Jourdan Dunn

Jourdan Dunn is the British 24-year-old unstoppable mother who was spotted in 2006 by Storm Models Agency. The following year she began international shows for Marc Jacobs and Polo Ralph Lauren. This splendour was chosen as the only black woman in a decade to walk for Prada, which defied the history books and set the tone for her career.

2008 was Jourdan’s year after walking 88 runways for the likes of Valentino and Louis Vuitton. The cultural pattern continued for her when she was often the only coloured woman that would feature the runway in future shows. Jourdan is known for her proud and thankful nature from this achievement.

This babe is clearly committed to making her supermodel dreams come true and strutted her stuff until she was 6 months pregnant with baby Riley and returned only 10 weeks after giving birth at 19 and described her son in 2010 as, ‘my inspiration’.

4. Edie Campbell

Edie Campbell is the 24-year-old former ‘Londoner’ turned model. This British beauty’s debut was Vogue feature that explored up and coming fellow ‘Londoners’. She was then asked to shoot a Burberry campaign alongside, icon, Kate Moss.

Edie has starred in campaigns for Hugo Boss, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and Karl Lagerfeld. She is widely known though, for the ultimate modelling tribute, when she closed the 2012 Chanel Spring/Summer fashion show as ‘The Bride’.

This siren is certainly valued and in 2013 was awarded British model of the year, beating Cara Delevingne and Sam Rollinson!

5. Maartje Verhoef

Maartje Verhoef is the Dutch 17-year-old unstoppable teen that walked the runway more than any one else last season with 66 runway shows. This flawless girl was spotted at just 12 in the Netherlands and was then scouted with Woman Management. With two covers, 15 editorials and also crowned UK Daily Telegraphs, Most Hard Working Model her dedication to her career isn’t going unnoticed.

Maartje has opened for Donna Karan and closed for Ralf Lauren and Victoria Beckham (which she stated to WWD was her favourite experience of 2014… Mentioning David especially). This unstoppable ‘princess’ with a precious aura and pixie like features is well on her way to becoming a muse of many and an iconic supermodel to all.
