Legendary rock band The Grateful Dead are preparing their final Fare Thee Well show in Chicago on Sunday Night, and US President Barack Obama showed his die-hard fan ways only the most powerful man in the world knows how.

President Obama paid tribute to the bands enduring legacy and mark of longevity, citing their 50th anniversary.

“Here’s to fifty years of the Grateful Dead, an iconic American band that embodies the creativity, passion and ability to bring people together that makes American music so great,” Obama wrote. “Enjoy this weekend’s celebration of your fans and legacy. And as Jerry [Garcia] would say, ‘Let there be songs to fill the air,'” a nod to American Beauty‘s “Ripple.”

The presidential message appeared on the program of Friday’s Fare Thee Well show. Obama’s relationship with The Grateful Dead spans eight years, as the band reunited for the first time in four years to play at two separate campaigns for the then Presidential Candidate spanning from February 2008 to October 2008. After Obama won the election, the band reunited for a third time, to play at one of President Obama’s 10 inaugural balls in 2008.

The Grateful Dead will close out their Fare The Well tour on Sunday night.
