We’ve seen Thor, the Hulk, and Iron Man multiple times over. We appreciate Scarlett Johansson’s fantastic supporting role as Black Widow, and we’ve heard all about Ronda Rousey’s rumoured attachment to Captain Marvel but it’s Jessica Jones who will have the honour of being Marvel’s first female superhero to actually be the hero when the show debuts on Netflix later this month. Brunette stunner and rising star Krysten Ritter takes on the super-strong part.

While she may look like a model, she appears well equipped to bring the power as a super-hero turned edgy private investigator in the second official trailer, released yesterday.

This trailer also shows a lot more of the shows villain, Zebediah Killgrave or  Purple Man as he’s better known, who has a tendency to control people’s minds and be generally evil. Played by David Tennant, the antagonist is a former spy who has previously terrorised Jones, using her as his own personal weapon before she managed to escape him, and the superhero life. Here it seems her old life comes crashing back down on her. Her ordeal with Purple Man left her a bit of a mess, more an anti-hero these days as she struggles under the thumb of alcohol and anger issues brought on by post traumatic stress disorder. Plenty of motivation for her to bring the baddie down.

Compared to most marvel heroes Jessica Jones has had a pretty brief history. She first appeared in comics in 2001. Renowned writer Brian Michael Bendis was tasked with creating content for Alias, the first series in Marvels MAX imprint (specialising in R-rated content), aimed at a very specific audience. His comics were to contain uncensored and explicit material for Marvel’s more mature readers. Originally he thought about using Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) as the main character but instead decided to create someone original, thus Jessica Jones was born. Adding this more adult centred content will be the style of the show, which looks more like a psychological thriller than the more traditional marvel offerings.

Starring alongside Ritter and Tennant will be Mike Colter as Luke Cage, and aussie Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker. Despite the darker, grittier theme, expect it to continue the trend of tying into the rest of the marvel cinematic universe and lay plenty of Easter eggs. Be sure to check it out when it debuts on November 20.
