You may not have heard of them until now but be assured you’ll be getting to know Tiny Little Houses a lot better over the coming years if their early work is any indication.
The Melbourne four-piece began life as a Triple J Unearthed artist but they’ve quickly extended beyond that. Their first single ‘Easy’ was immediately launched onto Triple J’s high rotation and was heralded as one of the best Australian songs of 2015, no mean feat for a band taking their first steps towards releasing music. ‘Easy’ was the first offering of their debut EP You Tore Out My Heart, released through Ivy League Records.
Listening to them immediately evokes thoughts of the early work crafted by cult alt rockers Modest Mouse. The American band formed in 1992, led by Isaac Brock, and have gone onto worldwide stardom gaining almost 2 million followers on Facebook and selling out any show they announce. The lyrical intricacy and skill of Brock is mirrored by Caleb of Tiny Little Houses, and it’s not hard to draw a comparison between the two especially since Tiny Little Houses even list Modest Mouse as an influence. Although it’s not to say they are copying Modest Mouse in way, shape, or form, in fact their take on the genre is quite unique.
Tiny Little Houses are already riding a mini-wave of success, having played shows and festivals alongside the likes of Sticky Fingers. They’ve also recently partnered with international booking agents WME Entertainment, joining artists such as Chet Faker and Angus and Julia Stone on the books.
If Tiny Little Houses continue to refine their melodic, emotionally poetic indie rock there’s no doubt they’ll become a massive crowd favourite in no time. While it may be a task to expect them to emulate Modest Mouse, they have the necessary potential to do so.
