Oscars 2016 Recap

The Oscars are done and dusted for another year, Chris Rock killed it, speeches ran over time, nominees, winners and politicians stood up for political change and Leonardo Dicaprio filled the Oscar shaped hole in his heart.

Here is the the official FIB recap, for those of you who want to relive the glory of the show and the ones who told everyone they watched it but fell asleep and need a quick run down before logging back onto Facebook.

Red Carpet

Twitter went crazy this morning when a beauty account mistook EGOT winner Whoopi Goldburg for retired talk show host Oprah… The tweet was swiftly deleted but judging by the memes that followed, not quickly enough. The tweet is high up there on the list of exquisite celebrity mix ups, beaten only by the infamous John Travolta “Adele Dazeem‘ incident.

The icing on the cake was Oprah’s response to the mix up.

Leo was making headlines hours before his category was up, arriving on the red carpet with long time friend, co-star and cheerleader Kate Winslet. The pair dazzled viewers, most likely spiking Titanic DVD sales in the process.

Awards

Chris Rock’s monologue and appearances that followed didn’t disappoint. It was no surprise that the majority of his material was race driven, the folly of the Academy and seemingly obvious prejudice in nominations still fresh in the minds of guests and viewers alike. The tone of humour was set early on and continued throughout the duration of the show.

“I counted at least 15 black people on that montage. I’m here at the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the White People’s Choice awards. If they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job.”

Rock’s jokes were clever and  well thought out, putting the title of his finished sitcom Everybody Hates Chris to shame. In a stunt rivalling Ellen’s Oscar Selfie/Pizza delivery Chris took the opportunity to help his daughter get ahead in Girl Scout cookie sales, raising $65,243 and satisfying our favourite famous people.

“I want you to reach into your millionaire pockets, and I want to you buy some of my daughters Girl Scout cookies”

The ceremony served for many as a platform to advocate issues held near and dear. Lady Gaga delivered a profound and moving performance, joined on stage by survivors of sexual abuse and introduced by Joe Biden, Vice President of the United States. In their acceptance speech for Best Picture the cast of Spotlight called upon the Vatican  to right the wrongs of the Catholic church, Leonardo Dicaprio also using his time to address climate change and the immediate threat of the issue to the environment.

Winners

Technical based awards were dominated by Mad Max: Fury Road Brie Larson took out Best Actress in her first Oscar nomination for Room and in the end of an era Leonardo Dicaprio took out best actor for his performance in The Revenant.  In an almost surprising but not disputed twist  Spotlight took home Best Picture and the show ended with a few words from Chris and a shot of Morgan Freeman eating some girl scout cookies.
