Fashion’s night of nights, the Met Gala, took place last night at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art, New York. The biggest name celebrities pulled out all the stops to ‘wow’ us with their futuristic-inspired wardrobes. Looking at some of the outfits, we could swear we had been surged forward through time to catch a glimpse at what the future of fashion holds; and we weren’t disappointed.
This year’s theme, ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology,’ was explored through geometric patterns, silvery fabrics, structured designs and robot-inspired accessories. The event takes place annually to launch the exhibition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, and assists in raising funding for its continued operation. A contrast between traditional tailoring practices and modern machine-made techniques is explored in the exhibition, and was likewise intended to be captured in the outfits of guests. Last year’s event theme, ‘China: Through The Looking Glass,’ was always going to be difficult to trump, however guests of this year’s Gala proved that it could be done.
Picking out the best looks is never easy, particularly when there are a number of factors to consider, such as efforts to stick to the theme whilst maintaining a look that is on-trend. With such an enormous volume of contenders, from actors to supermodels to reality stars, all of whom have spared no expense to turn the most heads on their walk down the red carpet, the numbers are tight.

As honourable chair of this year’s event, Taylor Swift deserves an honourable mention for her silver, snake-skin print dress and platinum locks, finished off with a gothic, deep purple lip colour and heels strapped high to the knee. Embracing the theme in its entirety, the singer put her best, Louis Vuitton-dressed foot forward in her custom-made gladiator heels, and dress to match.
Kim and Kanye, wearing Balmain, screamed “the future is now” in their coordinated metallic ensemble, complete with Kanye’s addition of blue contact lenses. According to him, “Vibes,” were the reason behind the change of eye-colour. Watch their red carpet interview with E! here.

Zayn Malik with girlfriend Gigi Hadid embraced the theme, seizing the opportunity to sport ‘Robocop’ arms over a slick Versace tux. Hadid’s sheer Tommy Hilfiger dress revealed a robotic bodice beneath, and the pair were picture-perfect for their first red carpet appearance as a couple.

Kate Hudson looked a dream in a bridal-inspired, geometric cut-out gown. The dress seemed like a glimpse into the future of bridal wear, and dared to show off a bit of leg. Lady Gaga, in a cropped, metallic jacket complete with shoulder pads and studded leotard, couldn’t resist a cheeky grab whilst helping Hudson with her train up the stairs.

Katy Perry’s complete and utter dedication to looking the part saw her arrive sans eyebrows… Yes, you read that correctly. We’re not entirely sure why the singer predicts that the future trend for eyebrows is to have none at all, but since the current fashion is to literally draw them on as dark as one possibly can, maybe this is the only logical turn it can take. Whatever the reason, her stunning beehive hairdo and simply astonishing emerald green dress were definitely the focus of her outfit.

In the words of Vanessa Williams, we’ve gone and saved the best for last. Feast your eyes on the real life Cinderella; Claire Danes. Wearing a show-stopping, illuminated ballgown by designer Zac Posen, she echoed the ethos of her past role as the desirable yet forbidden love, Juliet, in Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of the timeless romance ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ She fell into that role beautifully once again at the Gala. Lined with delicate fibre-optics, the creation was nothing short of a celestial dream.
