Maticevski Opens Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2016

Toni Maticevski kicked off Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2016, with some of the most innovative and trend-setting looks of the season. The Resort 17’ collection presented a darker tone to what we would expect from the Melbourne designer.

The designer presented his collection at Barangaroo Cutaway in Sydney, to a number of national and international industry media, buyers and VIP’s. The marble floors and sandstone façade gave way to the most highly anticipated collection of this year’s fashion week. Notable guests of the event included names like: Bridget Malcolm, Pip Edwards, Margaret Zhang and Bambi Northwood-Blyth.

Maticevski took his collection to a darker place, exploring the juncture where light meets dark, and welcomes an illumination of your own ‘inner darkness’. The monotonous palette of blacks, whites and greys, were broken up by buttery yellows, icy blues and metallic golds and silvers.

Maticevski’s signature style had been given a sombre appropriation, through a display of twisted chainmail and billowing dresses. The models wore pencil-thin heels, with crystal handcuffs by Ryan Storer, restraining their hands behind their back. Two piece suits and skirts fitted with ropes of fabric, provocative bustiers with detailed cut–outs and desirable sweeping gowns filtering through the collection.

Unapologetically sexy, the Maticevski resort collection explored uncharted territory for the label, and the designer himself. Toni Maticevski has consistently amazed fashion’s front row and this year was no exception.
