NBC Back In The ‘Good Place’

Over night NBC released the trailers for three new shows premiering later this year. Ranging from comedy to dramedy to time travelling fugitive drama all three look like they will bring a freshness to the channel that has been lacking since the end of ‘Thursday Comedy Night’  around 2012.

The videos were released shortly after the majority of major networks announced their renewal lists. While it seems NBC took the least blood in regard to cancellations, the majority of their already running shows continuing into the future the new arrivals should spice things up a bit, venturing away from reality and performance based content.

The Good Place

Created by Parks and Recreations Mike Shur and staring sweetheart Kristen Bell this series is set to fill the void left by your favourite television sitcoms. The series will follow Eleanor Shellstrop (Bell), who, after dedicating her life to saving innocent people on death row, finds herself dead and being transported to ‘The Good Place’. The only problem is there was a slight ‘Fork up’, Eleanor being confused with someone of the same name and maybe not as deserving of being dead at all. With the help of her afterlife mentor (Ted Danson) and ‘soulmate’ we will be witness to her adventures in the Good Place and probable change of heart. It’s pretty clear from the trailer we can expect a good time from the 13 half hour episodes. The smart and quirky show will surely provide us with the warm fuzzies as well as the occasional life lesson that we got from Parks and Recs and The Office.

Timeless

Tackling a completely different genre is Timeless, a time travel packed thriller which sees a history professor, soldier, and scientist go back in time to prevent a fugitive from changing the past. The trio must go back to 1937, the date the Hindenburg was set to arrive in America and stop the butterfly effect from kicking in, however upon arrival things past and present complicate themselves. The trailer hints at multiple twists and turns, ensuring an action packed season.

This is Us

The third trailer that was released looks like it will be a touch more down to earth. The ensemble series follows multiple stories, connected through the character’s  shared birthdays, whether or not the stories will further interlink as the series progresses is unsure but considering it is being directed by the same writer/directors as Crazy Stupid Love it’s a fairly safe bet. The trailer pulls at just the right heartstrings, it’ll be sure to be a roller coaster of sorts, most probably the emotional kind. The tagline “This is Real. This is complicated. This is life” already setting up the provocative feels. The show is also the return to television for Milo Ventimiglia who stole hearts in both Gilmore Girls and Heroes and you know what they say about threes. That the good things come in them.

All three programs have been given Fall release dates, which technically means Spring for us but no word yet about how or when these shows will make it to us in the Southern Hemisphere. But we’ll keep you posted!
