Premiering on AMC just yesterday, this new series, Preacher is based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s 90s comic of the same name. The story follows Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), a small town preacher who goes on a search to, quite literally, find God after a demon of pure good and pure evil takes up residence in his body. What ensues is steeped in ultra-violence and dark comedy, the collaboration of which sees Tom Cruise explode in the first episode.

The genre is hard to pin down, labelled as a drama/supernatural/horror/black comedy/western/road flick, and it will be interesting to see whether smashing these genres together will produce something worthwhile, or if it will be a hot mess. But with executive producers and long time fans, Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg holding the reigns, we might be in luck!

EPs Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg have been pining for their passion project to be green lit for years as they waited for the right time to pitch their version of Preacher and, if you’re already a fan of the comic, it is safe to say that it is in good hands. Evan Goldberg talked to Marissa Shapiro at AMC about the process of adapting the series and stated that Garth Ennis

“actually had to convince us to not stay as insane [as the comics]. In our heads, we were going to do it just like the comics and he said to us, “That’s not a good idea. You should restructure it. You could make it bigger and better. His main thing has always been to not ruin the core emotional story and to stay true to the main three characters”.

Plus, with the help of Breaking Bad writer/producer, Sam Catlin taking on the role of showrunner/writer/executive producer, there could be something unique about this comic adaptation…

In any case, heres the trailer to wet your appetite for what could be AMC’s best new series.
