A film icon notorious for his ‘mumbling’ diction and for exuding a raw animal magnetism, Marlon Brando Jr. is considered one of the greatest and most influential actors of the twentieth century.

Brando was a mimic from early childhood and developed an ability to absorb the mannerisms of people he played and displayed them dramatically while staying in character.

Brando turned this acting talent into a passion when he developed  his method acting style at the American Theatre Wing Professional School and at the Actors Studio where he was taught by Stella Adler and learned the techniques of the Stanislavski system.

In 1951, Brando launched his stardom by bringing Stanley Kowalski to the screen in Kazan’s adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for that role and again in the next three years for his roles in Viva Zapata! (1952), Julius Caesar (1953) and On the Waterfront (1954). These films established Brando as a star in Hollywood.

In 1972, Brando’s career was revitalized with his iconic performance as Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. Director Francis Ford Coppola convinced Brando to submit to a “makeup” test, and was so electrified by Brando’s characterization; he pushed the studio to agree with casting Brando. It was ultimately worth it with Brando winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.

With his dynamic acting style Marlon Brando has been immortalized as one of the greatest actors of all time. When describing the profession of acting, Marlon declared that “To grasp the full significance of life is the actor’s duty, to interpret it is his problem and to express it is his dedication’.
