gallery-1479689038-gettyimages-624728112It was a shock for all her fans when, in 2014, Selena Gomes unveiled that she was suffering from lupus, an illness that can cause anxiety, depression, and mental breakdowns. In August this year, she announced that she had to take a break to maintain her health and happiness.

At this year’s AMAs the 24-years-old pop star gave a very emotional speech, explaining why she had to give up her career for a while to focus on herself and the issues that her disease had caused…

“I think it’s safe to say most of you know a lot of my life whether I like it or not,” she explained. “And I had to stop because I had everything, and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.”

Besides thanking her fans for their incredible loyalty, she tried to give support to others who are suffering from a mental illness. As the queen of Instagram, she also talked about the importance of authenticity on social media. Currently, the superstar has the most followers, as well as the most likes for her pictures on Instagram.

“I’m not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore. All I can say, from the bottom of my heart, is I’m so grateful that I have the opportunity to be able to share what I love every single day with people that I love. And I have to say thank you so much to my fans, because you guys are so damn loyal, and I don’t know what I did to deserve you. But if you are broken, you do not have to stay broken.”
