Sidney Poitier’s skills as an actor defined who he was and changed the perspectives of Hollywood studios. Both in front of and behind the camera, his story has cemented him in film history…

He was born in Miami Florida on the 20th of February 1927. Sidney comes from Bahamian descent. The actor/ director was the first Bahamian and the first African-American to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Lilies of the Field.

In April 1997, Sidney was appointed as ambassador of the Bahamas to Japan, a position he currently holds. He is also the ambassador of the Bahamas to UNESCO.

To this day the significance of Sidney Poitier is undeniable and his contribution to film will not be forgotten. His story is proof that no matter what people say or think, you really can do anything you set your mind to.
