Taylor Bennett – Grown Up Fairytale ft. Chance The Rapper and Jeremih

Taylor Bennett, the younger brother of rap prodigy Chance The Rapper, has released his mixtape Restoration Of An American Idol this week. Bennett has developed his own fan base in his own right and this mixtape is a highly anticipated follow up to his break out 2015 album Broad Shoulders. The Chance The Rapper and Jeremih assisted track “Grown Up Fairytale” is the first single to be released from the mixtape and showcases the sweet and uplifting song style that we have come to expect from the Bennett brothers. The piano accompanied track reflects upon the personal growth of the artists, as Chance The Rapper became a father last year and Taylor Bennett announced his bisexuality on Twitter as well as having a rapidly blossoming music career. The soulful vocals of Jeremih and the underlaid female vocalists supply a soft and charming element to the already enchanting song.

Steve Lacy – Dark Red

Steve Lacy is the youngest member of the hugely popular band The Internet who grew in popularity with the soft, sensuous vocals of lead singer Syd and their belonging to the controversial group Odd Future. The Compton born, 18 year old, has released his debut solo E.P. titled Steve Lacy’s Demo, departing from the characteristic sounds from The Internet and developing his own unique style. Dark Red is a stand out track from the new E.P. that showcases the unique and impressive artist that is Steve Lacy. The laid-back song has an upbeat undercurrent conveying the anxiety of the lyrics that is artfully intertwined with the strength of Lacy’s vocals and the airy melodious harmonies in the chorus. The entire E.P. is a testament to Lacy’s musical abilities as he masterfully explores his funk, hip-hop and RnB influences.  Lacy released a combined video for the tracks “Dark Red” and “Ryd” which you can watch here.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – Nuclear Fusion

Psychedelic rock legends King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard have returned this week with their new characteristically absurdly titled album Flying Microtonal Banana. The album is a follow up to their phenomenal 2016 album Nonagon Infinity which was created to be played in a continuous, infinite loop. The opening track from the new album sees the band maintaining their roots with the typically lo-fi song “Nuclear Fusion”. The funky tune is a bit more slower paced than other songs on the album like “Rattlesnake,” it includes a 60’s inspired keyboard section and mind-bending lyrics.

Kite String Tangle – Selfish

“Selfish” is the new release from Brisbane producer Danny Harley also known by his moniker Kite String Tangle. The song has a biting beat and was written by the artist when as, he described, “realised that I wasn’t thinking about the people I love nearly as much as I should”. Harley continued, “It’s hard to admit you’re at fault but it’s also a good habit to get into if you’re wanting to be a reasonable human.” The danceable track features Harley’s smooth vocals and is ready for the next sepia toned summer festival. The song has been released with the announcement of the creation of Exist, his own independent record label. Producer Gold Vessel and LASTLINGS have already been signed to the label, which was developed in collaboration with UNIFIED.

Dope Lemon – Lovers Left To Die

The band Dope Lemon is a musical endeavour headed by Angus Stone of the magical folk duo Angus & Julia Stone. The band is made up of Angus Stone, Rohin Brown (of the Walking Who) and Elliot Hammond (of the Delta Riggs). The group has come together to combining both acoustic folk and psychedelic rock influences creating their own unique sound style. The band has just released their second E.P. titled Hounds Tooth, which includes the track “Lovers Left To Die”. The intensity of the song allows it to stand on it own, with its strongly pining and somber vocals, it is the most emotionally charged track on the E.P. The tropical sounding yet constant guitar plucking throughout the track gives the sensation of an uncomfortably ominous trouble in paradise.

Calvin Harris – Slide ft. Frank Ocean and Migos

This song features two of the hottest names in music right now: Frank Ocean and Migos. Fans initially took concern to the team up of Frank with a mainstream dance music producer like Calvin Harris but the result is an undeniable success. Harris began teasing the fun and upbeat song a week before its release through Snapchat. The song has come with annotation of the some of the lyrics from Frank Ocean himself on the website Rap Genius. Ocean explained that the opening verse which includes the lines “I might empty my bank account/ And buy that boy with a pipe,” which is a reference to the Picasso painting “Boy With A Pipe” which sold for $104 million in 2004.  “Slide” is a joyful and funky song, the perfect track to get your groove on to.
