We love how she has been muse and model for Miuccia Prada since the 90s, and now Chloë Sevigny has stepped behind the camera for her latest project with Miu Miu, premiering her own instalment of the brand’s Women’s Tales series in New York yesterday. Of course, this isn’t Sevigny’s first time dipping her toes into the directorial role. Titled Carmen, this short film is a complete 180 from Sevigny’s first fantasy inspired short, Kitty, who featured a girl who wished herself into cat form.

Instead the film follows Spanish-American comedian Carmen Lynch through a cinematic world. Think red and neon lighting and a wry sense of humour. Sevigny explained to Miu Miu that the notions and ideas she wanted to explore include “process, being a woman, celebrity and ego”.

Comedic with dark undertones, the film is both voyeuristic and candidly confessional. Carmen exposes the realities of life for women today, from modern dating misfires (we’ve all been there) to the quite frankly, ridiculous price of the morning-after pill. There is also a sense of nihilism to the project. When discussing her friend not wanting to know the sex of her baby, the comedian deadpans: “she says it’s life’s biggest surprise. That’s not life’s biggest surprise – death is…”. Whoa, talk about dark.

Lynch herself says “This project really captures a lot of who I am,” testifying to Sevigny’s insight and talent for capturing the world of the female comic in a male dominated industry.
