FIB Special Feature Film / History of Men’s Underwear

From loincloths in Ancient Egyptian times to calf length linen trousers in the middle ages, the idea of mens underwear has always served as one of purpose. They eventually took on a decorative approach as hemlines continued to rise.

If you were to ask someone from 1930 if they preferred boxers or briefs, you wouldn’t get an answer. Men from this time were familiar with wearing both tops and bottoms as undergarments, until the French influenced a new style of bikini-style briefs that can still be seen today.
