FIB Album Review Of The Week: Quiet Ferocity by The Jungle Giants

Your favourite indie pop/rock band The Jungle Giants are back with their third album full of groovy bangers and feel good vibes set to make any day better.

The Jungle Giants’ ten track album Quiet Ferocity is proving their most polished work yet.  Recorded at Empire Studios in Brisbane it was recorded and produced solely by the four-piece and includes the two already released singles ‘On Your Way Down’ and ‘Feel The Way I Do’. The album has received super high ratings from Triple J viewers after it was the station’s feature album last week with listeners describing it as “one of those albums you can listen to right through without skipping a song.”

The quirky band has always been quite popular following the release of their previous albums, Learn To Exist (2013) and Speakerzoid (2015) and have been known to maintain that groovy sound that can’t help but make you want to bounce your leg or tap your fingers. Their newest album is certainly no different.

It begins with “On Your Way Down” which is their infectiously, feel-good single that was originally released in May this year. It followed the release of ‘Feel The Way I Do’ which was released at the beginning of the year.

The rest of the album falls in a way that continues the story and the mood set by the first couple of songs. The fourth track ‘Used To Be In Love’ is magical and highlights the vocal skills of the band’s frontman, lead singer and guitarist, Sam Hales.  He has a way of really connecting to the lyrics and the sound which is what makes you fall in love with the songs so much. This album, while proving to be their most successful work, is also the one which reflects the most growth. It is a step up in maturity from their previous works while still staying true to their happy, quirky and feel-good sound that we just can’t help but love!

The band really went back to a time where old school disco synths took over. Sam sings gracefully over the top of some beautifully crafted beats that give funk a whole other meaning, especially in songs like ‘Waiting For A Sign’ that are reminiscent of some old fashion Daft Punk sounds. The album’s third track and a personal favourite here at FIB, ‘Bad Dream’, is the kind of song that you want to know the lyrics to just so that you can blast it in the shower and feel as badass as Cesira Aitken aka the coolest gal/guitarist ever.  (Like, ever)

After watching the band live in 2015, it is quite clear of the level of positive energy that the band expel during their performances. They clearly love what they do and Quiet Ferocity really proves this. Each song tells a story with carefully-crafted lyrics that are sure to keep you up at night. Sam Hales even admitted to wanting more attention from his lover on the song ‘Blinded’ which is seen to have a larger sense of vulnerability than most songs on the album. “I’m still blinded by your love” – how bloody cute.

Overall, the album proves as a reflection of the evolution of the bands sound since their first entrance into the music scene in 2011. Quiet Ferocity is by far the band’s best work yet and is sure to gather some new fans and just in time for their tour this August.
