SZA’s ‘Supermodel’ Video is a Modern Fable for Emancipation

A visually mystical neo-soul fusion of the past, present, and of things to come – SZA slays unscathed with nothing but the bare essentials.

In this newly released Nabil-directed video of SZA’s standout track “Supermodel” from her debut studio album, Ctrl, the rising neo-soul luminary struts with confident swagger out of her messy bedroom, beckoned forward by a group of fairy children along a path through a glittering magical forest as she gets sprinkled with golden fairy dust. She eventually ends up on a school playground and comes to confront the man who has been seemingly taunting her along the path she had taken. Shooting fireworks out of her fingers at the mans feet, and making him dance while he obviously cries out in distress – SZA shows us how to be both vulnerable and unapologetic, while conceptually redefining the notion of self-worth.

Pharrell Williams has also been credited for co-writing and contributing vocals to Ctrl‘s opening track. The song opens with SZA sultrily vocalising her emotions over the backdrop of an enigmatic electric guitar – which provides the skeleton of the composition – before finally breaking into a heavy swinging jazz-infused drum groove.

The video was released as an Apple Music exclusive. Check it out below and let us know what you think!
