Matt Damon’s Usual Film Narrative Undergoes ‘Downsizing’

Paramount Pictures has released the trailer for their forthcoming film Downsizing, starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig. At first glance it looks to be a cutesy comedy, but would you really expect Matt Damon to be associated with anything other than a life-changing oevre?

Directed by Alexander Payne and starring Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau and Jason Sudeikis, Downsizing looks to be a light-hearted comment on the strains of our environment due to over-population. Cue a mind-bending strategy in which humans can elect to undergo “downsizing”. Which is – you guessed it! – being shrunken into an adorable 3-inch version of yourself.

Of course, the strategy is marketed as a means to combat over-population and the resulting stresses placed on the environment – but far be it for Jason Sudeikis to be involved in anything other than a selfish and egocentric scheme. It’s all about the perks of downsized life, baby!

Whilst the trailer lacks Wiig’s usual witty one-liners or any semblance of a conflict-resolution plot line, there’s no doubt the unwavering stupidity and naivety of humankind will rear its ugly head and prove we’re simply incapable of inflicting less havoc on the environment. Or Matt Damon will inevitably become trapped or lost somewhere in ‘Leisure Land’, and the government will be tasked to send in reinforcements to save him.

Overall, Downsizing looks to be a cute portrayal of what one YouTube commenter described as a “post-apocalyptic Honey, I Shrunk The Kids” – awash with Matt Damon’s charming grin.
