‘Vaudeville Smash’ing The Aussie Live Music Scene

What do you get when you throw three brothers, a couple of mates, synth, sax, sweat and Italian passion in to a blender? A damn juicy outcome! The fantastic-funksters, Vaudeville Smash are playing at The Factory Floor in Marrickville on February 23rd – are you game?

Drawing their inspiration from legends such as Prince, Michael Jackson and Earth, Wind & Fire, Melbourne-based band Vaudeville Smash are combining to caress instruments and redefine Australian live music. Their live set summons an electrifying atmosphere spearheaded by frontman Marc Lucchesi. The lead vocalist, flute blower and sax machine will tempt you to his lair of ’80s boogie; if you dare accept his invitation you won’t be disappointed… although, you will come out the other side slightly delirious and lathered in sweat. Don’t worry, it’s more PG than it sounds.

Synchronisation is key for the Melbournites, as the tight-knit family foundation of the five piece seeps into their live set. Their on-stage chemistry is truly a wonder to behold, with dance choreography, harmonising and impromptu scat sequences ever-present. Although a high-octane arrangement, VS will tug at your heart strings through their slower, more drawn out and emotive jams; providing moments of much-needed respite from the inevitable dancing you’ll do throughout the rest of their performance.

A live song to watch for is fast paced ‘Laura’, taken from their latest album. When I discussed the meaning behind the song with lead singer Marc, he went on to say that it was based on those “who knew they were getting in above their heads with someone that was only in it for a very short time, yet still willing to go through with it.”

My guess is that their latest album The Gift (2016) will dominate their forthcoming live set, while new and inventive tweaks tried and tested over New Years at Woodford Folk Festival are sure to make an appearance. The band played a mammoth six shows in six nights! A clear example of that ‘Italian passion’ I’m talking about.

I’ll be bringing my dancing shoes and breathable button up on the 23rd: trust me, Vaudeville Smash gigs are a steamy affair.
