Red Carpet Reviewer Menswear Special: 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards

Red Carpets are usually a feminine domain, the natural variety and creative freedom afforded by women’s fashion has made them the central focus of red carpet coverage. Most men can comfortably get by with a classic suit, but thankfully there are those among them taking risks, advancing the style stakes and drawing some diversity back into red carpet fashion. Here are the men making waves at the iHeartRadio Music Awards:

Singer Ne-Yo owned his urban look-  a black and orange bomber, pinstripe tracks paired with a white tee, and pumps. What elevated this look was the black fedora, diamond ear piece and his innate confidence.

One of my favourite looks of the night came from Young Thug. He is no stranger to bold fashion choices and this jacket is a masterstroke. It’s strong use of colour is balanced by his choice of white under layers. The fringing is genius, unravelling the words emblazoned across his torso giving a 3D effect to the piece.

What’s great about a music red carpet compared to say that of the Oscars, is that the artists’ personality is really able to shine through. There are no conservative overtones they must adhere to so they are truly free to express themselves and their brand in a manner that reflects their music and personal style. Whilst rock stars have the cache to pull this off, I might add a ‘don’t try this at home’ disclaimer. Start instead by adding block colours into your wardrobe to achieve a similar impact.

G-Eazy was definitely among the best dressed, period. He’s made some very smart choices here, opting for an all black base layer broken up by the texture of his suede boots and a gold lurex blazer. The details and fit are what make this, a shortened cuff is very modern, exposing his jewellery and some skin, particularly since he has gone for a button up neck. It’s a twist on a classic suit with some creative details that compliment his partner’s look, without giving the red carpet over to her.

The leather jacket, skin tight jeans and tee may not be a new thing but they will always be in fashion. To keep it current Maslow has chosen a number with rose gold hardware and ripped jeans that contrast the clean boots and crisp hair cut. For a simpler but equally effective look, young Chavis popped his outfit with some metallic sneakers.

Geek Chic just so happens to be great American sportswear, a relaxed pant, unzipped sports coat in print or block colour form the hallmarks of this look. Remember Brad Goreski? He’s a stylist to the stars and one of the judges of Fashion Police – the panel led by the late Joan Rivers to roast and toast red carpets everywhere. Brad can polish a paper bag, whether it’s a tuxedo or a chino he knows the ins and outs of how to rock a look. His fashion prowess comes through in the tidiness of this look. It’s more of an ironic take, when you compare it to Charlie Puth’s looser fit and mixed prints which feel authentically him.

Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart are the award winning duo behind The Chainsmokers. I had to go back to the future and bring you their looks from the 2017 iHeart Radio Music Awards to compare against their 2018 ensembles. These two love a great decal jumper and so do I. Although you wouldn’t normally pair Donald Duck with an Oriental Lion the two manage to sync their styles, which gives credit to their chemistry in the studio. In 2018, the boys have hit it out of the park again with geometric numbers. The look is relaxed, has a sense of humour and, by pairing up, they have really given rise to The Chainsmokers signature look.

Glamour have compiled the 21 Best looks from the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards and not one male makes the cut. It’s such a shame, we talk a lot about pushing for equality and whilst females are still fighting the battle in professional arenas to achieve this, should it not flow both ways into those areas like red carpets where females are centre stage? Men are demonstrating a greater sense of interest in their style and a desire for creative expression through their clothes. We need to break down red carpet stereotypes and discover the interesting fashion moments that men bring to the table too.

The 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards is underway today with stars lining the red carpet outside The Forum in Inglewood, California. The live telecast will be co-hosted by Supermodel Hailey Baldwin and DJ Khaled alongside performances from Cardi B, Camilla Cabello, Maroon 5, Charlie Pooth and Eminem.
