Best known as Miranda Hobbs on the popular TV show, the actress took to Twitter to declare her candidacy in a video. In the clip she walks the streets of New York City making her way through Manhattan to the tune of an inspiring monologue about ending inequality, improving public education, and fixing the city’s failing subway system.

In the two-minute spot she pledges:

“Our leaders are letting us down. We want our government to work again, on health care, ending mass incarceration, fixing our broken subway…We are sick of politicians who care more about headlines and power than they do about us. It can’t just be business as usual anymore.”

The born and bred New Yorker will challenge Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primaries, who is running for his third term and mentioned as a potential presidential candidate in 2020.

The New York Times states that if she is elected, Nixon will become the first woman and the first openly gay person to become governor of New York. Nixon is not the first person in the entertainment industry to attain public office; she joins Ronald Reagan, former Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and US President Donald Trump.
