Pauline Hanson’s Trip To ‘Australia’s Most Muslim suburb’

Pauline Hanson is no stranger to controversy. After all this is the same person who caused outrage last year wearing a burqa in the Australian Senate.

The controvercial Queensland senator’s latest venture was walking the streets of Lakemba, ‘Australia’s most Muslim suburb’. It’s no secret the One Nation leader is not a fan of the southwest Sydney suburb, of which most residents are Muslim, telling the Senate last year the area is “no longer Australian”.

Ms Hanson agreed to walk down Haldon Street, Lakemba with A Current Affair’s Leila McKinnon but didn’t have anything good to say about the town. “There are communities here, people here, who have no intention of assimilating into our society,” she told McKinnon, on a wander down the street.

While some residents welcomed her, others shouted profanities. One person yelled, “Go back to where you came from!” The outspoken politician responded to the abuse, saying “Hey, hang on a minute, this is Australia, I was born here. I should be able to walk anywhere I want to in this country, go wherever I want to. Not have people like that tell me.”

She added: ‘A lot of police won’t come to this area, they will not attend to it because they are in fear.’ When asked if she would return to Lakemba, Ms Hanson said it was “on my big no list”. “That was definite when we got out of the car, even before. It’s not happening,” she said.

Later in the show, Ms Hanson reflected on her burqa stunt, stating no intention of re-wearing the Islamic garment as it was “poorly stitched” and made her feel “claustrophobic”. ‘I don’t like the bloody garb, and I think it’s horrible,’ she told A Current Affair.

Addressing the Senate in the burqa last year, Ms Hanson called for the government to ban ‘oppressive’ full-face coverings which she criticised as “a sign of radical Islam which threatens the true Australian way of life’’.
