Hot off the back of her rose-tinted ode to #PussyPower, Monáe has unveiled another visually stimulating clip for previously released track ‘I Like That’, off her forthcoming album Dirty Computer.
No political slogan undies here; instead, the video for ‘I Like That’ features some extravagantly gorgeous outfits, Monáe’s absolutely flawless complexion and of course, some flamingoes and peacocks to boot. Because it wouldn’t be a luxurious film clip without these universal motifs of decadence, would it?
I’m absolutely baffled how this singer-songwriter/actress/producer/activist manages to find time in her hectic schedule for whatever (presumably rigorous) skincare regime that produces such a godly complexion. Either this uber-talented lady is hiding some kind of youth elixir in her vagina pants or she is hashtag BLESSED. Either way, Janelle you need to hit me up ASAP.
The track itself is an ode to self-confidence;
‘I don’t care what I look like but I feel good / better than amazing, and better than I could / Told the whole world I’m the venom and the antidote / Take a different kind of girl to keep the whole world afloat’
Monáe exudes an inarrogant self-assurance, and through her own narrative inspires listeners to think themselves the ‘venom and the antidote’ in their own life too.
If the videos for ‘PYNK’ and ‘I Like That’ are anything to go by, the filmic accompaniment to her upcoming album Dirty Computer: An Emotion Picture by Janelle Monáe will surely be in line for an Oscar. I mean, she did lend her acting chops in two Academy Award nominated films Hidden Figures and Moonlight (the latter winning one, if you’ll recall) – so it’s not that much of a stretch, is it?
