Netflix series 13 Reasons Why has revealed a premiere date for its second season, along with a curious new trailer. Those wondering what on earth the second season could possibly entail can now rest assured: Hannah’s tapes were just the beginning…

The controversial drama, known for its stark depiction of bullying, rape and teen-suicide, is set to be released on Netflix on May 18th. Fans were left on the edge of their seats for hours after a livestream of two polaroid pictures was posted to the show’s social media accounts. The caption ‘the tapes were just the beginning’ teasing the premise of the long-awaited second season.
Jay Asher’s novel Thirteen Reasons Why – on which the show is based – doesn’t have a sequel, but was there ever really any doubt Netflix would dish up a second helping to the most binge-worthy series of 2017?
Just to recap: the first season closed its curtains with Tony delivering Hannah’s tapes to her parents (including Bryce’s confession), Alex shooting himself in the head, and Tyler packing his camera bag with guns and ammunition. Oh, and don’t forget Tyler’s creepy darkroom hanging with candid shots of the core ‘Tapes’ group.
Interestingly, the season two trailer hints rather heavily that a series of suggestible or incriminating polaroids will form the basis of this seasons arc. Did Tyler take these snaps too, or were Hannah’s tapes part one in an elaborate posthumous revenge plot?

And what will be the repercussions of Tyler’s ominous gun stash? Will the series take a swing at America’s ‘school shooting’ culture next?
Either way, I’m sitting on the edge of my seat. And it kind of goes without saying, but I remain steadfast in my opinion that 13 Reasons Why is a much-needed conversation stoker in the seemingly unspoken culture that is preadolescent bullying, depression and suicide.
Sweeping ‘taboo’ topics under the rug isn’t an effective means of combatting the increasing rate of teenage suicide, and if a teen drama (of all things) can shine a harsh and unflattering light on the destructive behaviour the vast majority of us witness, experience and perhaps even partake in during our formative years – I’m all for it.
