The gender gap in the Australian music industry is alive and well. While it takes a force of what seems like overwhelming strength to change social and cultural norms, it’s a feat readily invested in by APRA AMCOS. EQUALIZE is a full day workshop designed for women and non-binary aligning APRA AMCOS members.
Trained on honing the ability and technique of the nation’s aspiring producers, EQUALISE identifies the gender gap as their target. APRA AMCOS’s head of member services, Jana Gibson, describes the initiative:
“Equalize has been designed to provide women and non-binary songwriters and composers with hands-on skills development in a professional studio setting alongside established music producers and creators. The initiative aims to highlight music production as a viable career pathway for this underrepresented sector of our membership.”
Led by experts in production wizardry, the workshops will take place in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne with the initiative to coincide with International Women’s Day, falling on March 8 in 2019. With a focal point across three main areas, attendees will hone their skills (1) composing for the screen, (2) electronic/pop music production and (3) recording/producing bands in studio.
The professional female voices on hand include APRA Screen Music Award-winning composer and AGSC President Caitlin Yeo, mixer/engineer Antonia Gauci and producer Mookhi. Shelley Bishop from Sydney based recording facility Studios 301, Jan Skubiszewski, screen composer Bryony Marks, Ableton expert Jane Hadley, electronic music innovator Eve Klein and Liveschool’s Ninajirachi will also be offering up seasoned secrets to mastering the art of production.
