FIB’s Predictions For The 2020 Grammys

With the excitement surrounding Grammy nominations, which will be released on the 20th of November in America (21st in Australia), some sources are reporting that they may have accidentally already been leaked.

The Recording Academy, which present and select the Grammy Nominations and Award winners seemed to have a technical glitch on their website. Fans noticed that late Tuesday night in Australia, the Grammy artists’ nominations numbers had increased. Taylor Swift’s nominations read 35, whilst she only had 32 before. Ariana Grande’s nominations read as 11, but had only 6 before last night. However, as of 10am today (Sydney), they have changed back to their previous number of nominations.

We’re not sure if this is a leak, or merely a technical glitch. But I guess we’ll find out later tonight.

Meanwhile, here are some predictions for Grammy nominations:

This year, Album of the Year will have eight slots, and for a nice change, it seems like women will be the front-runners for the category. Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and FIB’s favourite, Lana Del Rey, seem to be contenders for a nomination. The A Star is Born soundtrack has been picked as a potential album of the year, and if it won, it would be the first soundtrack to win the category since 2002.

Best Pop Album, which was won by Ariana Grande last year for Sweetener, could easily be won by her again this year for thank u, next. Taylor Swift’s Lover which outsold every album this year in its release week is also a contender for a nomination as well as Del Rey’s Norman F****ing Rockwell, and Billie Eilish’s WWFA, WDWG?

Record of the Year favourite seems to be the Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus collaboration for Old Town Road. Some other front-runners are Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy, Lizzo’s Truth Hurts and Grande’s thank u, next.

The artists who dominate our predictions for Record of The Year are also predicted to receive Grammys for Best New Artist, with Billie Eilish, Lizzo and Lil Nas X at the top of the charts this year.

Country music favourite Maren Morris, who won Country Album of the Year at the CMAs last week could also score nominations for a Grammy this year and the Jonas Brothers’ new album Happiness Begins could be a Grammy nominee.

There has been some debate at the FIB office regarding the Grammys and their reputation for awarding mostly heterosexual Caucasian artists, particularly men. It will be interesting to see how the Grammys also attempt to pander towards artists who will amass audiences and viewers like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande.

One thing’s for sure, the absence of any possible Rihanna nominations has us slightly upset. Miss you RiRi.

Grammy nominations will be released at midnight AEST.
