Police Chief Erika Shields resigned following the death of 27 year old Rayshard Brooks, which sparked new protests across Atlanta.

This comes after the social anger and protests following the death of George Floyd across Minneapolis.

Atlanta’s Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, announced the chief resignation in a press conference.  She called for the dismissal of the officer who shot Brooks.

“I do not believe that this was a justified use of deadly force and have called for the immediate termination of the officer,” Bottoms stated in a press conference

Protesters burnt down Wendy’s Restaurant, the place where Brooks died. Many protesters gathered in the highway. The mayor stated that it was the Police Chief’s personal decision to resign and that she would remain in the city with an unknown role.

In a statement, Erika also said she resigned out of a deep love of her city and police department.

According to investigators, a complaint that the victim was sleeping in a car and blocking a drive through led to the death of the victim.

Security footage reveals the footage of victim fleeing police, raising his hand holding some kind of object. He aimed the object at the police officer which prompted the officer to raise his gun and fire.

Brooks had four children and celebrated his daughter’s eighth birthday before his death.

Members of Brook’s family gathered with protesters, outside the Wendy’s restaurant. One of them was Cynthia Brooks, his sister in law.

“He wasn’t causing anyone any harm. The police went up to the car and even though the car was parked they pulled him out of the car and started tussling with him,” said Cynthia Brooks.
