With the current coronavirus restrictions easing, most of us are keen to get out of the house. Why not head to one of these Aboriginal art galleries, and feed your eyes and perhaps become an owner of Aboriginal art?
1. Kate Owen Gallery, Rozelle
Kate Owen Gallery is a multiple award winning gallery in Sydney’s Inner West that houses Aboriginal artworks of established artists as well as new talent. The gallery also sells artworks that are affordable as well as high price pieces (for those of you who would like to invest), so that everyone can own a beautiful piece of Aboriginal art! Situated at 680 Darling Street Rozelle, they are open 7 days a week from 10am – 6pm.

2. Aboriginal Art Galleries, QVB
Situated in the heart of Sydney, on the 2nd floor of QVB, the Aboriginal Art Galleries have artworks from renowned artists, as well as emerging artists, that have been purchased directly from government community centres or from artists directly. Staff at the Aboriginal Art Galleries are also readily available to educate you. 59 new works have been added in the past two months, and are available for purchase, so head on over and take a look! Due to the ongoing pandemic, the gallery hours have been adjusted from Monday – Saturday 11am – 5pm, with Sunday appointments available upon request.

3. Cooee Art Gallery, Bondi & Paddington
Cooee Art Gallery, at Bondi Beach, is Australia’s oldest fine art gallery and business, established in 1981 in Paddington. Visitors are welcome to visit at no charge during opening hours, and can participate on free gallery tours. Offering over 3000 works of art from 150 individual artists, Indigenous paintings, sculptures and even limited edition fine art prints, Cooee Art Gallery is a must visit. There are now two locations, one at Bondi Beach and Oxford Street Paddington, so why not head over to one of them!

4. Spirit Gallery, The Rocks
Located at The Rocks, Spirit Gallery focuses on affordable arts and crafts. Frequently visited by some of the most well-known didge players, the gallery has a didgeridoo store – the only specialist didgeridoo shop in Sydney. For those who might not know anything about didgeridoos, experienced staff are available to help. They are currently trading from Thursday to Sunday 10am – 5:30pm, with hopes to extend trading hours as restrictions ease.

5. Aboriginal Contemporary, Waverley
Opening almost ten years ago in Bronte, owner Nichola Dare forms unique relationships with artists by taking personal trips to remote parts of Australia, giving local and international buyers the opportunity to artwork that would be otherwise unavailable. ‘Nganampa Tjukurpa Ananyi Kakarara – Our Stories Going East’, currently showcases paintings, ceramics and mixed media sculptures, done by artists from one of Australia’s oldest continuously-running art centre, Ernabella. If you’re free Monday to Friday, from 10am – 5:30pm and Saturday at 10am – 5pm, take the time to have a look.
