Angus Stone’s alias Dope Lemon has released a tranquil collaboration with Winston Surfshirt which sees the two singer-songwriters exude laid back tropical summer energy for their new track ‘Every Day Is A Holiday’.
On Friday, laid back singer-songwriter Angus Stone, who also goes by the name of Dope Lemon, released a track featuring Winston Surfshirt that is dripping in chilled-out energy; transporting you to a sun-kissed beach far away from the current turbulent state of the world. The duo’s smooth vocals paired with dreamy and dainty guitar notes, brass instrumentals, and airy accents take the listener out of this cosmos to a state of pure tranquility.
The track also comes with a placid and relaxing music video that features the two artists lazing by the ocean, amongst nature, and sipping margaritas by the pool, which is anyone’s ideal summer getaway, right? The boys act cool as a cucumber in this new video and the music and vocals make you melt deep into your seat.
The two artists are masterminds behind that quintessential alternative psych-rock sound and have put their heads together to produce a new song that melds their two genres, Angus’ indie rock music with Winston’s funk-soul vibe. Announcing the collab last Sunday, Dope Lemon Aka Angus Stone shared a trippy psychedelic artwork for their new track which features a cartoon image of Angus and Winston that channels kaleidoscopic hippy vibes.
The new track marks the first release for both artists since their latest albums and marks a new collaboration of two artists with great admiration for one another. This is Angus Stone’s first musical release since his 2019 album Big Smooth Cat and is the first new music from Winston Surfshirt since the release of their 2019 sophomore album Apple Crumble.
Talking to triple j both Angus Stone and Winston Surfshirt talk about working together and how their new song came to be;
“Being a big fan of what Winston does, I felt the song lent itself to his style, so I hit him up,” Stone says about their new collaboration. “It was a good vibe straight away – the cool fella he is swaggered in and dropped some very tasty gold coins on the tune.”
“’Every Day is a Holiday’ is a song Angus asked me to be a part of while Winston Surfshirt were touring Europe in early 2020,” says Winston. “I first heard the demo somewhere between Berlin and Brussels and loved the feel of it.”
Stone says the song has special significance being, “about that special human you have in your life that makes you feel the warmth of the sun every time you are together. Every day you get to spend with one another is more special than the last on this magic holiday you’re rolling round on.”
In March this year, Stone participated in ‘Songs for Australia’ which was organised by his sister Julia Stone, asking Australian artists to cover some classic Australian songs. Angus covered The Go-Betweens’ ‘Streets of Your Town’ which was also released as a single.
Stone was also set to tour Australia, Europe, and the UK in 2020 which was unfortunately cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Despite this bad news, some new dates have been confirmed for the Dope Lemon 2021 tour, see below.
Winston Surfshirt has been placed as a headliner on the Yours & Owls 2021 festival lineup which is from January 23rd and 24th in Wollongong, NSW. Winston and his band are accompanied by some huge artists including Tones and I, Benee, Cosmos Midnight, DMAs, Hayden James, Lime Cordiale, PNAU, What So Not, and so much more.
