Cruella, set as a prequel to Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, gives us glimpses into the antagonist Cruella’s back story. Taking place in 1970s London, the trailer immediately delves into the villain’s rather unique mindset and follows her motivations, interactions and descent into (further) madness.

Starring Emma Stone as the titular character, the actress’s voice and mannerisms display distinct inflections and gestures. These both set her apart from other actresses in the role whilst also retaining the image of the well-known villain. The actress told Vogue,

“Cruella is a fantastic character to get to play because she’s larger than life…It’s been a great experience to play around with her backstory and discover what makes her the woman she becomes in the story we’ve seen”

But the trailer has generated mixed viewer response. Some fans praise the costume, make up, and Emma Stone’s acting choices, “Cruella seems far more stylish than I expected and Emma Stone is wonderful as always!” But others are critical that the film glamourizes animal skinning & the fur industry, “This character literally skins puppies and you’re trying to make a girl-power movie about her…?”

The trailer also highlights aspects referencing the original 101 Dalmatians film. Scenes depict growling Dalmatians, and a van driven by Cruella’s villainous henchmen Horace and Jasper.

In addition to this, Glenn Close, who portrayed the Dalmatian-coat obsessed villain in the 1996 live-action version of 101 Dalmatians will serve as executive producer.

Cruella is in cinemas from the 28thof May 2021.
