The Disney+ series is based on a handful of characters and comics created by a number of people. These include “Falcon” by Stan Lee and Gene Colan, “Bucky Barnes” by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, and “Winter Soldier” by Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier will follow two of Captain America’s closest allies. Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes will embark on various adventures and combat enemies old and new.

WandaVision provided a more in-depth look at the story’s lore, and progression of character arcs. Character development through an extended backstory and exploration of a new narrative will also be in the new series. Sam Wilson/Falcon faces consternation over his newfound responsibility, after being handed the mantle of “Captain America” by Steve Rogers. Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier faces trepidation over adjusting to life without his companion Steve, while also dealing with the advancements and social norms of the 21st century. Malcolm Spellman, head writer for the series, describes the dynamic between the two characters as being like fire and ice.

Director and Actors

Directing the series is Kari Skogland. Working consistently since 1994, some of her directing credits include episodes from prominent shows such as Vikings, The Walking Dead and The Handmaid’s Tale.

Aside from Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, a few actors from the MCU will also be making a return. Familiar faces include Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, and an appearance by Don Cheadle as James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes/War Machine.

The series will also include a plethora of new actors and characters. Wyatt Russell will portray John F. Walker, a member of the military who bears one of its highest rankings. Erin Kellyman will play Karli Morgenthau, the leader of an anti-patriotism group. In addition Danny Ramirez, Noah Mills, Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa and Carl Lumbly have been cast in undisclosed roles.

The series will run for 6 episodes, with each projected to release on a weekly basis.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier will air its first episode on Disney+ starting March 19.
