Ridley Scott’s upcoming fashion biopic, The House of Gucci, details the true-crime story of Maurizio Gucci’s murder. This marks a noticeable departure from Scott’s usual sci-fi epics. The film is based on Sara Gay Forden’s book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed. The biopic will reveal the details of Gucci’s ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani’s involvement in the high profile murder. The story includes the events leading up to the murder, the public trial and Reggiani’s subsequent 29-year prison conviction.

Amongst the films stars are Al Pacino, Lady Gaga, Adam Driver Jared Leto, Jack Huston, Reeve Carney, Jeremy Irons and Salma Hayek.

An Invasion of Privacy

One of Maurizzio’s second cousins, Patrizia Gucci, has told AP News that she fears that the film goes beyond the sensational true-crime story. She feels that it pries into the private lives of the Guccio Gucci heirs.

“We are truly disappointed. I speak on behalf of the family.

“They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system….Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything. but there is a borderline that cannot be crossed.”

Patrizia Gucci has stated to AP that the Gucci family will decide whether to take further action once they have viewed Scott’s House of Gucci. Their fears of the film’s accuracy is due, in part, to inaccuracies that the family sees in Gay’s book The House of Gucci.

“Really Ugly”

“Horrible” and “ugly” appear amongst published family comments about the casting of the movie. The comments came after the family saw the casting of Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci; a professional salesman whom was responsible for the opening of Gucci stores on Rome’s via Condotti and in New York. He created a roster of VIP clientele and established the brand’s global outreach. Patrizzio Gucci has stated that,

“My grandfather was a very handsome man, like all the Guccis, and very tall, with blue eyes and very elegant.

“He is being played by Al Pacino, who is not very tall already, and this photo shows him as fat, short, with sideburns, really ugly. Shameful, because he doesn’t resemble him at all.”

Gucci also singled out the casting of Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci.

“horrible, horrible. I still feel offended.”

No Response

Patrizio Gucci has stated that she has attempted to reach out to Ridley Scott’s wife, Giannina Facio. Patrizzio Gucci wanted to clarify the film’s intentions Facio but she has not received a response. In the 2000s, Facio met with members of the Gucci family to discuss another project focused on Patrizia Gucci’s father, Paolo and her grandfather, Aldo. The lack of communication regarding the current production of House of Gucci has heightened the Gucci family’s concerns regarding the film’s content.

Ridley Scott’s production company have not responded to requests for comment.
