In the lockdowns of our a not-so-distant past, one of humanity’s comforts was setting themselves in front of a screen and watching. Whether it was a series, a documentary or film, people spent hours tuning in as a means of escapism. The MTV Movie and TV Awards honours nominees with accolades based on votes cast by the public.

This year’s event was separated into two nights. The first night celebrated scripted shows and film while the second focused on unscripted or reality television.

Scripted

Leslie Jones, of SNL and Ghostbusters fame hosted the first night’s ceremony. Taking place on the 16th of May 2021, the comedienne gave an amusing and energetic opening monologue. The actress also later won Best Comedic Performance for her part in the film Coming 2 America.

Marvel-related nominees saw great success during the night, particularly Wandavision. The Disney+ series won Best Show, while its lead actress Elizabeth Olsen achieved Best Performance in a Show. Additionally, the series’ antagonist Kathryn Hahn won Best Villain. Furthermore, both actresses were honoured with a golden popcorn for Best Fight between their characters Wanda and Agatha. The show acquired accolades for four of the five categories it was nominated in.

However, in the category they lost in, a fellow Marvel-related nominee won. Anthony Mackie won the award for Best Hero in Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The series also won the award for ‘Best Duo’, awarded to Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s characters Falcon and The Winter Soldier respectively.

Other winners include Victoria Pedretti for Most Frightened Performance in The Haunting of Bly Manor. Additionally Rege-Jean Page received the award for ‘Best Breakthrough Performance’ in ‘Bridgerton’. A posthumous accolade was awarded to Chadwick Boseman for Best Performance in a movie.

Unscripted

The following night saw Nikki Glaser hosting the festivities focused on the unscripted shows. This marked the first ever instance where an entire night was dedicated exclusively to reality television. The comedienne gave an impassioned and humorous opening monologue based on the authenticity and importance of reality shows.

Winners include Bretman Rock as Breakthrough Social Star and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah as Best Talk/Topical Show.
