Ridley Scott presents us with yet another action-filled drama. Set in 14th Century France, the story revolves around the very last duel sanctioned by the King of France.

Ridley Scott previously gained popularity with a film about French duels called The Duelists. 40 years later, he’s returned to medieval France to bring us The Last Duel, a film about lies, law and high stakes

Originally scheduled for release in 2020, The Last Duel is a big film for Scott as well as its two leads, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who contributed to the screenplay alongside filmmaker Nicole Holofcener.

The duel and film are about a woman named Marguerite who was allegedly attacked by her neighbour, Jacque Le Gris. Marguerite and her husband, Sir Jean de Carrouge were not able to claim justice through the court so Jean speaks directly to the King and requests a fight to the death. The lack of evidence and witnesses pushes the King into sanctioning the duel to “let God decide”

The stakes are as high as ever since the victor would be rewarded as being truthful.

The movie will also draw on elements from Eric Jager’s book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France. The book is similarly about the same events in more detail so it is a must-read before or after the film comes out.

The Last Duel will release only in theatres on October 15th.
