HBO has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, House of the DragonThe highly anticipated series takes place 200 years before the events of the original series, following the rise and reign of the Targaryen family as rulers of Westeros.

In the short teaser, Matt Smith narrates images of Targaryens in the throne room, jousts, fights, and tense moments. We also see a Targaryen king sitting on the Iron Throne, a much larger and more imposing structure in this series, more like it is described in author George R.R. Martin’s books. Dragon is based on Martin’s book, Fire and Blood.

Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series tells the story of a turbulent period for House Targaryen, one that set sibling against sibling and dragon against dragon. The point of contention: who should rule on the Iron Throne, of course.

Martin teased in his blog,

“If you’d like to know a bit more of what the show will be about… well, I can’t actually spill those beans,” but you might want to pick up a copy of two anthologies I did with Gardner Dozois, Dangerous Women, and Rogues, and then move on to Archmaester Gyldayn’s history, Fire & Blood

Who’s in the cast?

Paddy Considine (HBO’s The Third Day and The Outsider), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Matt Smith (The CrownDoctor Who), Steve Toussaint (It’s a SinDoctor Who), Eve Best (Nurse JackieThe King’s Speech), Rhys Ifans (Notting HillThe Amazing Spider-Man) and Sonoya Mizuno (Ex MachinaCrazy Rich Asians) have signed on for the series.
