Drag is a phenomenon that goes back as early as the 1800s. But it really came into mainstream popularity on the small screen with the competition reality show, RuPaul’s Drag Race. Starting in 2009, the show hosts the world’s most famous drag queens who compete to be “America’s Next Drag Superstar”.

The series has seen the art of drag, femininity, performance and self-expression taken to a whole new level.

But behind all the glitz and full glam, drag queens have had a long journey to acceptance in society. They have tackled numerous misconceptions about the art of drag, their sexuality, and masculinity all while wearing a pair of 6-inch heels.

Now, they are challenging old-fashioned boundaries in fashion. Drag queens are ready to take on the world of high fashion. At Paris Fashion Week, Drag Race season thirteen winner Symone and season seven’s Miss Fame were pictured at Vivienne Westwood’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection.

Drag Race alumni Gigi Goode and Symone also posed for Moschino in their Fall/Winter Campaign this year.

So, from dressing in drag in a locked bedroom to being on the front page of high-end brand campaigns, it’s easy to say drag queens are finally getting the recognition they deserve.
