Director Robert Eggers has made quite a name for himself in recent years with The Witch and The Lighthouse; psychological horrors that linger and disturb long after the credits roll.

The Northman, touted as a “Viking revenge saga”, was co-written by Eggers and Icelandic poet, novelist and lyricist Sjón. The newly released trailer boasts an exciting array of famous faces, including Alexander Skarsgård as Viking prince Amleth, who sets out to seek vengeance after the murder of his father. Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, and Willem Dafoe feature in supporting roles. And notably, everyone’s favourite Icelandic musician, Björk, is also set to appear in her first acting role since 2000’s Dancer in the Dark.

Eggers’ third film, The Northman appears to have a larger and more action-heavy scope than previous ventures. We’re hoping that it retains the claustrophobic and intimate quality that made The Witch and The Lighthouse so memorable.

The Northman hits theatres on April 22 via Focus Features.
