A Step Back In Time

The garage-punk, New York 2000s formed band is composed of vocalist and pianist Karen O, guitarist and keyboardist Nick Zinner, and drummer Brian Chase. But how did the legendary punk band merge their musical abilities into the world-wide known band they are today? The scene is set at Oberlin College in Ohio in the late 1990s, when Karen O and Brain Chase, as eager, young student musicians met. Chase was a jazz student at the Conservatory of Music, whereas Karen transferred to New York State University.

They kept their close ties. Karen at her new institution met the soon-to-be guitarist and keyboardist – Zinner, in a bar. Magnetically drawn by the power of music, they soon shared a loft together. The band was formed in 2000 in New York. Zinner and a friend of his referred to as Orzolek formed a duo called ‘Unitard’, but eventually got bored by the somber, acoustic genre they created, and formed a punk-rock duo. They based their inspiration on the avant-punk rock bands that Karen O was inspired by at Oberlin College in Ohio. Musical inspirations include The Strokes and The White Stripes.

The bands genre and style has is edgy post-punk, sort of a mix of Blondie and Siouxie and the Banshees. The original drummer they recruited left, and fate intervened, when Chase joined.

History Of Their Albums

Their first self-debut album was released in late-2001, entitled Shifty”. Which astronomically reached the UK Indie Chart’s top number 1. They began making their mark on the international stage in early 2002, through performing in the United States among other household names. Such as touring America with Girls Against Boys. Their debut album ‘Fever to Tell’ was released the following year, and sold up to 750,000 copies. With many more impressive and internationally praised singles, the band hit success.

The band’s second album “Show Your Bones” was released in 2006. It was rated the 44th best album in 2006 by Rolling Stone magazine. With many more albums from ‘Is Is’ in 2006, and ‘It’s Blitz!’ in 2009. Getting together to perform throughout the years, and are ready to perform on March 18th in London and Manchester!

The band hasn’t recently released any new music; hence, the absolute excitement to be performing a headline show once again. As Karen O, the lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs told nme in 2020,

“It feels like time to have something new out there. But that’s yet to happen, so we’ll see how this year goes.”
