“Don’t Worry Darling”

Warner Brothers recently announced the new film starring Styles and Pugh. The film is a 1950’s psychological thriller, which follows the characters lives. Moreover, focusing on Pugh’s portrayal of a typical housewife of the time period, the story unfolds as her character’s sanity begins to crack.

However, it seems the sweet innocent life of a 50’s housewife turns into a nightmare as Pugh’s character Alice, begins to question where the men go during the day. Also, her character feels like an outcast, as none of the other women in town seem to share her concerns.

Teen Vogue were able to snag director Olivia Wilde’s comparison of her newest film,

‘Olivia also compared Don’t Worry Darling to Inception, The Matrix, and The Truman Show’

The Warner Brothers thriller is set to hit the big screen on the 23rd September, 2022. The movie began production in late 2020 however, having a brief pause due to Covid-19 events. Fortunately, the delay hasn’t affected the wait time on giving fans what they want.

Who Are The Stars?

Alongside Styles and Pugh, cast members include Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, Kiki Layne, Sydney Chandler and Nick Kroll. With such a diverse cast there is no denying the movie will have a captivating energy!

Pine is set to star as the villain of the film, being branded as a ‘cult-like’ leader. Layne’s character however, may be the only one on Pugh’s side as some point during the thriller.

I think we can all agree that the trailer displayed strong on-screen chemistry with all actors. Especially, Styles and Pugh with an inside look at their married relationship, highlighting their frisky display of intimacy. But, will there be more to the story than a strong physical relationship between the pair?

Heavy Themes

It would seem this film will not be for the light-hearted. The psychological thriller will battle with gender roles, sexuality and toxic masculinity. As well as, vivid and nightmarish hallucinations suffered by Pugh’s character, Alice.

Despite the picturesque town and background of the film, there seems to be something sinister in the undercurrent. This seems to be where the heavier themes come into play.

Accompanied by intense background music and cryptic language, the trailer has all our arm hairs standing pin-straight.

In an interview with Vogue UK, Wilde described the focus of the film to be to ask questions such as,

“What are you willing to sacrifice in order to do what’s right? If you really think about it, are you willing to blow up the system that serves you?”

If this sort of psychological thriller is just what you need for an adrenaline rush, counting down the days until release will be agony!

Quick Facts

It was said that Wilde was set to play the lead role in her own film, however, after seeing Pugh in ‘Midsommer’ she was mesmerised by her talent.  Instead, the director was able to be in a supporting role.

The role of Styles character, Jack, was the hardest to fill. According to Wilde, she was hesitant to choose the right male actor to support a leading female role. She couldn’t speak more highly of the singer in an Instagram post dedicated to him.
