Motor Ace returns after a 17-year break, and they’re gearing up for the “Five Star Laundry Anniversary Tour”, which begins today – Friday, June 10th 2022. Check out our chat with the band below…

What inspired you as a band to finish your new single Knock Knock almost 20 years after starting it?

We reformed for a 20-year reunion tour in 2019. We were all shocked by the good vibes coming from packed out shows. We had such a good time that we were inspired to get back into the studio to record four new tracks. Knock Knock is the first cab off the ranks.

Can you tell us more about the upcoming tour and what your fans can expect?

Five Star Laundry is still our fan fave album (it’s ours too). The shows will include all the tracks from Five Star as well as our singles from the other records. Given that we’ve recorded new music, we’ll even be showcasing a couple of new tracks. Can’t wait.

After the new single and national tour, will the band be creating more new music? If so, how would you describe your future direction?

We are currently finishing off the new EP of four tracks. We plan to release all of these and then drop a Vinyl EP in 2023. In terms of our new sound, we’ve gone back to our rock’n’roll roots and injected a darker moodier twist. Fans of Five Star Laundry are gonna love it.

Motor Ace has been around for over 20 years, how has the title ‘Musician’ changed for you? Does it still hold the same meaning as it did 20 years ago?

I think the term musician has held its meaning over the last 20 years. On the other hand, the commercial expectations of being a ‘successful musician’ have changed completely. Seems like musicians, in addition to playing music are expected to be comedians, Vloggers, content producers, marketers… the list goes on. We would have failed miserably if we were starting out today.

How do you think your single Knock Knock fits into today’s Australian Music scene?

I think that there are lots of bands from our era coming back to play again at the moment and many of them are putting a fresh spin on their familiar sound. We are super lucky to have channels like Double J whose listeners still want to hear from old trout like us.

What is the meaning behind your new single Knock Knock

Pat won’t tell me… certainly something dark from the past but I wouldn’t want to second guess. What do you think it means???

Who decided on the concept for the Knock Knock music video?

Guilty. The live and backstage footage works perfectly with the song’s raw rock energy. Originally filmed for a Motor Ace doco that has stalled, we had loads of awesome shots to choose from. It’s also a great way for newbies to get a feel for what our live shows are like.
