When Elliot Page came out as a transgender man in 2020, it was evident that “The Umbrella Academy” would be going through some changes to Page’s storyline.

Showrunner Steve Blackman and writer Thomas Page McBee were nothing but supportive of the actor. Both fully intended to make the transition on-screen as seamless as possible. But, not without heavy support and emotion.

THE TURNING PAGE FOR PAGE

Page expresses how his character, Viktor, was never truly himself. Just as Page himself felt in real life. It was eye-opening for the actor and his character, as his character was finally able to take on life as his authentic self.

Another successfully done aspect was it didn’t become the whole storyline. Rather an additive to Page’s character, opening up doors to expand character depth. Page is looking forward to relaying future trans stories on the show.

As the script for season 3 of the show was already finished, rewrites for Page’s character were inevitable. Therefore, trans writer Thomas Page McBee was brought into the team to create a sensitive transition for the character’s storyline.

SUPPORT THROUGH THE TRANSITION

Page made the comment that his character Viktor, never felt completely free. Much like the actor in real life. Commenting on Page’s love interest at the end of season 2, opened up a pathway for his character to develop further into season 3.

Page comments on what his work experience was like after coming out as trans,

“I felt so supported by everyone,” he shares. “We were shooting right after I disclosed that I’m trans, in total isolation. That was definitely an overwhelming period, but I feel so lucky that I was going to work and getting to be with so many supportive people. I’m so lucky to work with this cast.”

His character definitely has blossomed into a more self-assured and involved character on the show. The supportive display on the show should be highly regarded. As it has set a positive example for the future of trans people in the industry.

Furthermore, writer McBee comments on the credit Page should be recognised with,

“I think Elliot deserves so much credit, which I’m sure he doesn’t want to take, because of the humble guy he is, just in terms of offering himself to us as a way to create an authentic story.”

CREATING THROUGH GENUINITY

“The Umbrella Academy” presented a happier transition for a trans character. It is known for storylines like this to take a dark and bumpy turn. However, the show highlighted how easy and emotional it can be when done right.

As the show is of fantasy/Si-Fi genre, there was an avenue the writers could have gone down to explain Page’s character’s transition. Luckily, they didn’t choose an outrageous event, but rather a simple and authentic storyline. Which is reflective of many individuals in real life.

The show should receive genuine recognition for the work and love put into the show.
